However, before you set off at full speed, it is essential to learn how to brake effectively. This article explores the main methods to slow down and stop safely on a longboard, while highlighting how to avoid common mistakes.

Essential braking techniques in longboarding

The foot brake: The classic method borrowed from skateboarding

The foot-brake technique is often the first type of braking learned by beginners, being directly derived from traditional skateboarding. To perform this method, choose a straight and smooth road without traffic. Push slightly forward and roll for a few meters while maintaining a stable position. Then, use your back foot to apply controlled friction against the ground until you come to a complete stop. The more pressure you apply with your back leg, the faster you will stop.


The slide: Stylish but technical braking

For thrill-seekers and fans of spectacular maneuvers, the slide offers an elegant way to brake, although this technique is more difficult to master. On a slightly sloping road, adopt a wide and stable stance on your longboard. Bend your knees and shift your weight backward while maintaining balance. Then turn your back foot 90° forward to put the longboard sideways. Once sufficiently slowed down, return to a normal position. Gloves are recommended if you plan to place your hands on the asphalt for extra support! 


Carving: Inspired by snowboarding to slow down effortlessly

Carving is an easy-to-learn technique ideal for gradually reducing speed. Inspired by sliding sports like snowboarding or skiing, carving involves making continuous S-shaped turns to decrease speed. Although this method is enjoyable and smooth, it becomes less effective at high speeds.
