FAQ – How to Choose and Apply Your Surf Wax

What is wax used for on a surfboard?
Surf wax is a non-slip wax applied to the top of the board, called the deck. It improves grip underfoot during take-offs, movements, and turns. It is not used to make the board slide: unlike the wax used in skiing, it is placed on the contact area, not under the hull.

Which surf wax to choose according to water temperature?
Choose according to the water temperature of the spot, then check the range indicated on the product. In our selection, the Bubble Gum Purple is rated for water below 16 °C, the Machado Eco Wax Cool/Warm for 14–23 °C, and the Premium Formula Tropic for water above 23 °C. Some ranges overlap: follow the specific indications for each formula.

What is the difference between Cold, Cool, Warm, and Tropic wax?
These names refer to formulas suited for different water temperatures. A cold water wax generally remains softer at low temperatures, while a tropical wax is formulated to better maintain its grip in warm water. The thresholds are not the same across all brands: compare the indicated temperatures rather than just the name.

Why does my wax become too soft or too hard?
A wax that is too soft may be used in water that is too warm for its formula or may have been exposed to high heat before the session. Conversely, a wax that is too hard may lack grip in water that is too cold. Check the temperature range and the condition of the existing layer before adding more wax.

How to apply wax on a surfboard?
Work on a clean, dry board at a moderate temperature. Rub the wax with light pressure, in cross or circular motions, to create a consistent texture on the contact areas. Look for small, sticky bumps rather than a thick, smooth layer. Follow the product recommendations regarding the possible use of a base coat.

Should a base coat be applied before the wax?
The base coat is a preparation layer, usually harder, on which the appropriate water wax is applied. It can help with the formation and retention of texture, but its use depends on the formula and coating of the board. Check the manufacturer's instructions: not all waxes and boards require the same preparation.

Where should you put wax on your board?
Apply it to the areas of the board where your feet make contact. On a shortboard with a tail pad, the wax mainly covers the front foot area. On a longboard, the coverage also depends on your movements and your noseriding practice. Do not put wax under the board, on the fins, or in the boxes.

How much wax should be applied?
The amount depends on the surface to be covered and the condition of the board. A first application usually requires more wax than a touch-up. The right indicator is a consistent grip across the entire usable area, without excessive buildup. Adding a lot of wax on a dirty or smooth layer does not necessarily fix the lack of traction.

Should you apply wax before every session?
Check the grip before entering the water. A slight touch-up may be enough if the texture has flattened, but it is not necessary to completely redo the layer every session. Renew it when it becomes dirty, less grippy, or unsuitable for the water temperature, rather than continuously layering new coats.

What is a wax comb used for?

The serrated part allows you to recreate texture in a layer that has become smooth, while a flat edge, when present, helps to remove the wax. A dedicated scraper also makes it easier to clean the deck. Combing the wax does not replace its renewal when it is loaded with sand or when its formula no longer matches the conditions.

How to remove wax without damaging your board?

Use a comb or scraper designed for this purpose, with gentle motions. Avoid metal blades, high temperatures, and solvents that are not compatible with the construction. If a cleaning product is necessary, follow its instructions and those of the board. Collect the wax residue instead of leaving it on the beach or in the water.

Can you put wax on a softboard?
It depends on the surface. Some foam surfboards require wax, while some textured or EVA surfaces may be designed for use without wax. Check the manufacturer's recommendations before application, including formula compatibility and any need for a primer.

Can you use a pad instead of wax?
A surf pad provides grip on the surface it covers. A tail pad does not replace the wax under the front foot. You can combine both or complement the setup with a compatible front grip. The choice depends on the pressure points, the surface, and your preferences underfoot.

Can you mix waxes of different temperatures?
To maintain predictable performance, choose a formula suitable for the water and follow the recommended layering system. Layering tropical wax over a very soft cold water layer does not ensure good performance in warm water. When there is a significant change in conditions, remove the old wax if it is no longer suitable.

How to keep your surf wax?

Keep it in its packaging or a suitable box, away from sand, sunlight, and high temperatures. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or in direct contact with your clothes. A clean and properly stored wax is easier to apply, without adding sand grains to the deck.
